5 Questions to Ask Before Buying Jennifer Lawrence's mes Haircare

Jennifer Lawrence is launching a haircare brand on 27 October, and I already know what will happen. A lot of people will buy it because she is funny and likeable and has never seemed like a sales person. Some of them will love it. Some of them will wonder why they spent the money.

I am not here to tell you not to buy it. Nobody outside the company has seen the products yet, so nobody can honestly review them. But there are a few questions I would want answered before putting mes in my basket, and they apply to pretty much any celebrity beauty launch.

What exactly does "biodesigned" mean?

The brand's tagline is "Biodesigned Haircare by Jennifer Lawrence." It is made with Arcaea, a Boston biotech company founded in 2021 by the chemical engineer Jasmina Aganovic, which uses biology and fermentation to make beauty ingredients. That is a real and interesting idea. Still, "biodesigned" on its own is a marketing word. On launch day I want to see which ingredients came out of that process and what they are supposed to do for my hair. If the brand can explain that clearly, it has earned some trust.

Who is actually behind it?

This is the part that impresses me most. Arcaea raised a large Series A from backers including Chanel, Givaudan and Bill Gates's Cascade Investment, and Olaplex later took a minority stake. Those are not names that throw money at a pretty logo. It does not guarantee great shampoo, but it suggests there is real science money involved, which is more than many celebrity labels can say.

How much will it cost?

We do not know yet. Prices, product names and retailers are all still under wraps. My guess is that it will sit at the premium end, but that is a guess. When the numbers come out, compare them with what you already use and like. A famous founder is not a reason to pay double.

Is it for my hair type?

Haircare is personal in a way that lipstick is not. Fine hair, curly hair, coloured hair and damaged hair all need different things. A good launch will tell you who each product is for. A vague one will promise to suit everyone, which usually means it suits no one in particular.

Will it still be around next year?

The celebrity haircare shelf is crowded. Cardi B, Beyonce, Jennifer Aniston, Tracee Ellis Ross and others are already there, and not every star brand survives once the launch buzz fades. If you fall in love with a product, it helps to know it will still be on sale when you run out.

For what it is worth, I am quietly hopeful about this one. Lawrence has avoided product deals for most of her career, and choosing a lab partner over a quick licensing deal says something. I would just wait for the details before deciding.
