Chappell Roan Proved She Doesn't Need New Music to Pack a Room

Pop careers are supposed to run on a steady stream of new releases. Chappell Roan has gone a long time without one, and her latest shows in Los Angeles suggest it hardly matters. Her two-night Super Graphic Spectacular at the Shrine Auditorium on October 21 and 22 felt like an event, not a holding pattern.

A Benefit First

The shows marked one year of her Midwest Princess Project, which supports trans youth and LGBTQ+ communities. A statement quoted by Rolling Stone said the project has raised over $800,000 and helped more than 60 organizations, with net proceeds from these concerts going to that work.

A Guest List That Felt Like a Community

Night 1 included Christina Aguilera joining Roan for "Beautiful," plus Lola Young, Tinashe and drag performers, with comedian Caleb Hearon hosting. Night 2 brought Caroline Polachek, MUNA and more. PinkPantheress joined Roan for "Tonight," Lola Young turned "Picture You" into a duet and Roan jumped into Polachek's set for "Look at Me Now."

Mixing chart pop, experimental pop and drag made the nights feel like a scene coming together rather than a standard tour stop.

The Long Gap Is Not Hurting Her

Roan has not released a full follow-up to her 2023 debut, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, and she even joked about not putting out a song in a long time. Yet critics noted that songs like "Femininomenon," "Red Wine Supernova" and closer "Pink Pony Club" still landed as if they were brand new. That is the sign of an artist whose live show carries real weight.

Why It Matters

Benefit concerts can be soft PR. These ones raised money for a clear cause and reminded the industry how strong her pull is. Afterward Roan thanked fans and guests on Instagram, saying she was "smiling ear to ear."

Night 1 Highlights

The Los Angeles Times covered the first night, when Roan performed her own "Coffee" and a live take on Olivia Rodrigo's "Expectations," a remix she recently appeared on. The lineup also included Amanda Lepore, Blaine Petrovia and Kyra Jete, while Night 2 added Alisa Mae, Fantasia Royale Gaga and Sweady Eddie. Giving stage time to drag and queer performers alongside pop stars fit the purpose of the shows and made the cause feel present rather than just printed on a ticket.

Whenever her next album arrives, she has shown that the audience is still waiting for it.
