Choosing the Next 007: What Screen Tests Reveal About the Bond Search

The search for the next James Bond has moved from rumor to the camera. This weekend, screen tests are reportedly taking place in London, and a short list of names is finally coming into focus as Amazon MGM Studios looks for Daniel Craig's successor.

Who Is in the Running

The Guardian, citing The Hollywood Reporter and Variety, reported that Callum Turner and Slow Horses star Jack Lowden are among the actors testing. Deadline reported that at least four final screen-test offers went out, with Lowden, Turner and Josh O'Connor among the names expected. The fourth has not been publicly identified, and some reports leave room for a fifth.

The tests were expected earlier in October but slipped because of scheduling conflicts. There is still no firm public date for a decision, though many observers expect news by the end of 2026.

More Than an Audition

Bond screen tests are big productions. Reports describe three parts: stunts, presence on camera and dialogue, with hair, makeup, costumes, sets and other actors involved. The question is simple but expensive to answer: can this person carry a global franchise?

Three Different Bonds

Each contender would bring something different. Turner, known for Masters of the Air, has been in the conversation for months. Lowden, 36, has become a favorite in several recent reports and is also playing Mr. Darcy in Netflix's Pride and Prejudice, due in December. O'Connor offers a more offbeat, character-actor profile that would signal a bolder direction.

Picking between them is really a choice about what kind of Bond the studio wants for the next decade: classic leading man, steely and grounded, or something less expected.

Why It Matters Beyond Fans

Bond is one of the most valuable film franchises in the world. The casting will shape box office plans, marketing and the tone of the series for years. That is why every leak gets so much attention.

Timing and Rumors

Part of the fun of any Bond search is the side chatter. Some fans have floated the idea of Dua Lipa, Turner's wife, singing a theme song if he lands the role, a rumor that says more about public appetite than any studio plan. Lowden's timing is also interesting, since a December Pride and Prejudice release would put him in the spotlight just as a decision might arrive. None of that settles anything, but it shows how closely the world is watching.

Until an announcement arrives, the guessing game continues, but the field has never been this narrow.
