John Mayer's Road to His Own Record Label: A Short Timeline

John Mayer now has his own record label. Sob Rock Records was announced on 22 October as a partnership with Mercury Records, part of Universal Music Group, and the first release, a single called "Tom and Jerry", came out the next day. It is his first new single in five years.

On its own that sounds like a business headline. Put it next to everything he has done since 2021, though, and it looks more like the last step of a plan. Here is how he got here, in order.

2021: Sob Rock, the album

Mayer's most recent album came out in 2021 with a wink at 1980s soft rock in both its sound and its look. It also turned out to be his last record for Columbia, the Sony label that had released every one of his studio albums. Nobody knew it then, but the title would come back.

2022: Leaving Columbia

The following year Mayer and Columbia parted ways. For a lot of artists, being without a label is a worrying place to be. For Mayer, with a big catalogue and a loyal live audience, it was more like a long pause to think.

2024 and 2025: Dead and Company at Sphere

He spent much of that pause on stage. As a co-leader of Dead and Company, he helped design the band's residencies at Sphere in Las Vegas across 2024 and 2025. That is not a small thing. Sphere shows are built from the ground up for the venue, and he got to learn how they work from the inside.

Buying a studio

At some point along the way, Mayer and the director McG bought Chaplin Studios, a historic Hollywood lot that used to be home to A&M Records and later Henson Studios. "Tom and Jerry" was recorded there. I find this the most telling part of the whole story. Owning the room you make records in is a level of control most musicians only dream about.

22 October 2026: Sob Rock Records

Then came the label. Mayer said in the announcement that the path from creative vision to execution has never been easier, and Mercury boss Tyler Arnold was full of praise in return. The name borrows the 2021 album title, which is a nice way of tying the new chapter to the last one. Mercury's roster already includes Morgan Wallen and Noah Kahan, so Mayer joins a label that knows how to reach younger listeners.

23 October 2026: "Tom and Jerry"

The single was produced by Blake Slatkin with Mayer and mixed by Serban Ghenea. Fans on SiriusXM got an early listen on his channel, Life With John Mayer, before the official release.

April to June 2027: His own Sphere residency

Next up, Mayer returns to Sphere on his own from 8 April to 12 June 2027, with full-band shows, John Mayer Trio sets and solo nights.

Line all of that up and the picture is pretty clear. Studio, label, single and a residency built with lessons he learned at the same venue. No album has been announced, and I would not want to guess at dates, but it is hard to believe he has gone to all this trouble for one song. I think we are watching a slow, careful rollout, and I am happy to wait for it.
