Why a Hockey Romance Series Is Getting a Movie Theater Run
TV shows do not usually end up in multiplexes. Heated Rivalry is about to prove that a passionate fan base can change that. The hockey romance series is getting a limited theatrical run in more than 650 US cinemas from November 6 to 30, with screenings planned in the UK, Australia and New Zealand too.
How It Will Work
Regal is leading the release with Sphere Abacus, the Bell Media-owned distributor, and bringing it to AMC, Cinemark and other cinemas as well as more than 275 of its own locations. Instead of a single marathon, the six episodes are split into three paired screenings, and tickets cost $9.99 each, according to Variety.
That format is smart. Fans can watch the full story across three nights out, or pick the pair of episodes they love most. Regal screenings also add welcome content from the cast and directors, and some cinemas will serve two themed cocktails, the Summer in Montreal and the Russians Don't Blush.
Why Cinemas Want This
The autumn release calendar has gaps, and cinemas need reasons for people to come in. Event screenings for shows with devoted audiences, such as concert films and anime, have shown that fans will pay to watch something they already know if the experience feels special. A shared screen, a crowd that cheers at the right moments and a themed drink turn a rewatch into an outing.
About the Show
Created by Jacob Tierney and based on Rachel Reid's bestselling novels, Heated Rivalry follows rival pro hockey players Shane Hollander, played by Hudson Williams, and Ilya Rozanov, played by Connor Storrie, whose competition slowly becomes something neither of them fully understands. The story has built a big following online, which is exactly why a theatrical run makes sense.
The Episodes on the Schedule
The three screenings pair the episodes in order. The first covers "Rookies" and "Olympians," the second "Hunter" and "Rose," and the third "I'll Believe in Anything" and "The Cottage." Marketing company PaperAirplane is supporting the in-theater promotion. Because each ticket is $9.99, seeing the whole season on the big screen costs about thirty dollars, which is cheaper than many single premium movie tickets in big cities and makes the event easy to sell to fans.

If the run sells well, expect more studios to test the same idea with their most loved series.
